Each one read one: WOO sets goal to sign up 50 students to obtain library cardsAugust 06, 2003 The World of Opportunity (WOO) has set a literacy goal to encourage at least 50 students to obtain Birmingham Public Library cards before the year is out. We will aim for 100 more cards in 2004. Studies confirm that the quantity and quality of reading and improves when students self-select their books. Many of our students are also young parents and we are encouraging them to read more books to their children. The WOO has assembled a wonderful collection of more than 5,000 books. We need local help to develop a useful library. The WOO is also beginning a campaign to place used books in the local stores of our Gate City neighborhood to promote and improve reading and literacy habits. Vacca's Supermarket, owned by Vincent Vacca (WOO Community Advisory Board member) is the first store which has agreed to join this effort. |
