James Armstrong and the class action lawsuit to integrate Graymont Elementary School honored at the WOO

August 07, 2003

The ACT-NOW (Advocates for Children & Teachers National Organizing Workshop) 2003 & the Committee to Recognize Courage in Education Award, will be presented to:

Mr. James Armstrong
Monday, August 18, 2003, 11:00 AM
World of Opportunity (WOO)

Come learn how Mr. James Armstrong and his family helped to bring the 1954 US Supreme Court decision, Brown vs. Board of Education, to Birmingham. Forty years ago, on June 10, 1963, Dwight & Floyd Armstrong integrated Graymont Elementary School. Five days later, 16th Street Baptist Church was bombed. The civil rights struggle in Birmingham has always been directly linked to equal access in education. The same struggle continues today as children are being pushed out of school, denied an education, and forsaken for standards and standardized test scores.

If you would like to send Mr. Armstrong a statement, we will be glad to read highlights and present them to him on the awards ceremony on the 18th.
